- Goal: Be the first to reach 20 Lore
- Ink: Once per turn, place a card from hand into your inkwell for mana
- Play: Spend ink to play characters, items, and actions
- Quest: Exert a ready character to gain its Lore value
- Challenge: Exert a ready character to attack an opponent's exerted character
- Fresh: Characters can't act the turn they're played (unless they have Rush)

Game Overview
Two players (Illumineers) compete by building decks from 2 ink colors (60 cards). Play characters, items, actions & songs. Be the first to reach 20 Lore to win.
Turn Structure

Ready
— Un-exert all your characters and refill your ink.

Draw
— Draw 1 card (skip on the very first turn of the game).

Main Phase
— Ink a card, play cards, quest, challenge, use abilities (in any order, any number of times).
Actions You Can Take
Ink
Place 1 inkable card from your hand face-down into your inkwell. Once per turn. This is your mana for playing cards.

Play
Spend ink equal to a card's cost to play it from your hand. Characters enter the field "fresh" (can't act this turn unless they have Rush).

Quest
Exert a ready character to gain Lore equal to its ◆ value. Exerted characters are vulnerable to challenges.
⚔
Challenge
Exert a ready character to attack an opponent's exerted character. Both deal their ⚔ Strength as damage. If damage ≥ ♥ Willpower, the character is banished.
Card Types

| Item | Objet | Stays in play and provides ongoing or activated abilities. Cannot quest or challenge. |
| Action | Action | A one-time effect. Play it, resolve its text, then it goes to your discard pile. |
| Song | Chanson | A special kind of Action. You can either pay its ink cost normally, OR exert a character with cost ≥ the song's cost to sing it for free. |
| Location | Lieu | Stays in play. Has Willpower and a move cost. Characters can move to locations and gain their benefits. |

| Rush | Célérité | This character can challenge the same turn it's played (ignores "fresh" restriction for challenges only — still can't quest). |
| Evasive | Insaisissable | Only characters with Evasive can challenge this character. Makes it very hard to remove via combat. |
| Bodyguard | Garde du corps | This character enters play exerted. Opponents MUST challenge this character before any others (unless using Evasive). |
| Shift | Alter | Play this card on top of a character with the same name for a reduced ink cost. The shifted character keeps its exerted/ready state and damage. |
| Ward | Résistant | The first time this character would take damage or be targeted by an opponent's effect, prevent it. Ward is then removed (one-time shield). |
| Challenger +X | Offensif +X | When this character challenges, it gets +X Strength for that combat. Does NOT apply when being challenged (defensive). |
| Resist +X | Tenace +X | Whenever this character takes damage, reduce that damage by X (minimum 0). Stacks with Ward. |
| Reckless | Téméraire | This character MUST challenge if able. Cannot quest while there are valid challenge targets. (Downside keyword.) |
| Support | Soutien | When this character quests, you may add its Strength to another character's Strength this turn. |
| Singer X | Chanteur X | This character can exert to sing a Song with cost X or less for free (instead of paying its ink cost). |
| Sing Together | Chanter ensemble | Another character can join in singing this song. Both characters exert, but only one needs to meet the cost requirement. |
| Voiceless | Aphone | This character cannot use the Singer ability to sing Songs. They must pay ink normally. |
Key Terms
Exert
Engager
Turn a card sideways. Exerted characters can't quest, challenge, or use exert abilities until they ready at the start of your next turn.
Ready
Prêt
An upright card. Ready characters can quest, challenge, or use abilities. All your characters ready at the start of your turn.
Banish
Bannir
When a character's damage equals or exceeds its Willpower, it's banished (destroyed) and placed in the discard pile.
Inkwell
Encrier
Your mana pool. Cards placed face-down as ink. Each ink provides 1 mana per turn to pay for playing cards.
Lore
Savoir
Victory points. Quest with characters to gain Lore. First player to 20 Lore wins the game.
Fresh
Fraîchement joué
A character that was just played this turn. Fresh characters can't quest or challenge (unless they have Rush for challenges).
Inkable
Encrable
A card with the ink symbol (◆) on it. Only inkable cards can be placed in your inkwell. Powerful cards are often not inkable.
Strength ⚔
Force ⚔
The damage a character deals during a challenge.
Willpower 🛡
Volonté 🛡
A character's health. When damage equals or exceeds Willpower, the character is banished.
Beginner Tips
- Always ink a card every turn — the more ink you have, the stronger cards you can play.
- Don't quest with weak characters if the opponent has ready challengers — they'll be banished easily.
- Characters with Evasive are great questers — they're very hard to remove.
- Use Bodyguard characters to protect your important questers.
- Shift lets you upgrade a character at a discount — try to set up Shift combos for big power swings.
